Counseling and psychotherapy in Portland, OR
People sometimes fall into the trap of struggling so hard to solve a problem that they lose track of finding a solution. Sometimes therapy can help you to take a step back from all of the hard work you’ve been putting into solving your problems and get some perspective. It can also be useful to create some breathing space to help you get back in touch with what is really important to you. If you choose to create that space through therapy, I am very happy to provide my compassionate and dedicated assistance. We will take the time to untangle you from the painful experiences you have been struggling with, and find new ways of approaching life that are consistent with your personal values.
I typically work with adults looking to better cope with depression, anxiety, addiction, anger, interpersonal and relationship problems, and problems with adjusting to life transitions. I specialize in working with individuals who are struggling with bereavement and grief, trauma and Post Traumatic Stress disorder, and chronic medical conditions, including chronic pain. Unfortunately, I am unable to provide couples or family therapy at present, but I will sometimes include partners or family as an adjunct to individual therapy.
I only use therapies that have good scientific evidence to suggest that they can be helpful. I focus on providing acceptance and values-based therapies within the Cognitive Behavioral tradition of empirically validated treatments, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I also often find it useful to incorporate Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) and Motivational Interviewing into treatment.
ACT asserts that while psychological pain is inevitable, it is struggling against pain that leads to deepened suffering. FAP is a behaviorally-based therapy that emphasizes the quality of our relationship as key in your healing and transformation. I also use Motivational Interviewing, a humanistic therapy designed to help clarify your values and help maintain your motivation to pursue the things in life that are important to you.
We feel most fulfilled when we are in touch with our core values and our true selves, and our work will focus on bringing these forth for you. Together, we will work to expand your capacity to be open, vulnerable, aware, and present. You will also have many opportunities to develop different skills (e.g., acceptance and mindfulness), develop how to express yourself fully, to take risks, to grieve losses, and to create better relationships. Above all, I will be a genuine person in the room with you, and my main guiding principle is to do that which is in your best interest.
